How many beacons are required to cover the underground parking?

Indoor positioning system is used mostly when GPS or RTK GPS is not available, for example, in underground parking. This one was requested for a patrolling wheeled robot.

The question is typical and straightforward: “How many beacons are required to cover the underground parking?

As usual, we requested a floor plan from a potential customer and then marked our recommendations for the stationary beacons by orange dots. General recommendations about the placement of stationary beacons shall be checked in our Placement Manual. This post is about a particular case as an example.

Case description

  • Patrolling/scanning  robot moving along the yellow line
  • Automatic charging in the “Robot parts” room
  • The corridor 04-05-06 is covered with three beacons, though, it is short, because it is narrow. See more in these videos why
  • There are no beacons outside the door near 10-11 beacons to save a couple of beacons. This part of the path the robot drives using odometry. After entering the area with ultrasound positioning, it locks back to the system and corrects the accumulated errors

Summary

The case is very typical, relatively simple, and can be used as an example for similar cases.
